Snowmageddon January 2011

We've been out of school since Sunday. We found out Sunday night that we would not be having school on Monday. Monday morning we woke up to 5 inches of snow on the ground. It was an awesome snowfall for a Tennessee winter. The kids were so excited to see all that snow on the ground and being able to play in it was that much better.

Elizabeth had a whole lot of fun walking through the snow covered trees. Just look at that grin on her face.

Abby had a lot of fun sledding down the hill. I loved seeing the look of pure joy on her face.

Elizabeth and Abby enjoyed helping Daddy shovel off the driveway. I was counting my lucky stars that we had lived in Indiana where it snows. We had the snow shovel and sleds that most people down here don't have. It was nice having everything and not having to search the stores for the few items they do stock. If only more places carried the snow pants and bibs.

We've had fun in the snow. But at this point the kids and I are going a little stir crazy. We are going on our 4th snow day and I think we are all ready for school to start back. I wouldn't mind another snow storm this winter but I am ready for this one to be one of the past.

Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

Over the past two days we got about 11 inches of snow and ice. Most of it was snow. We probably shouldn't have shoveled the driveway yesterday so now we have a huge layer of ice. But that worked out great because the kids and us adults (kids at heart) enjoyed sledding down the driveway. It wasn't as big of a run as we use to have at my parent's house or the hill in Murfressboro, Tn but it did just fine for us. Anyhoo, here are some of the pictures of us enjoying the snow. Enjoy!

Columbus Flooded

I've been trying to do this post all weekend long and just haven't been able to figure out how to make people understand. If I were a photographer I would take pictures and show them to you but I'm not and I am sure many of the people who have lost everything would not appreciate someone taking all those pictures. We had a very small flood in comparison to some of the neighborhoods two city blocks away. And because we were without phone, internet, and cable we were not aware as to how bad things really were. It wasn't until Sunday when we talked with a neighbor who's husband is a firefighter that we found out. Driving to Lowe's today proved to be a real eye opening experience for all of us. As we drove we saw whole neighborhoods emptying their houses onto their sidewalks and into their yards in an attempt to save their belongings and their homes, but unfortunately most of it will be gone. Several people I know had severe damage to their homes. Some had 3 to 4 inches of water in their basements, others the same in their main living areas, and some even had to be rescued by boat. Most of these people don't have flood insurance because they were not in flood plains. This was a flood that is being called a 100 year flood, the last one of the magnitude being in 1913. The clean up has begun and many people are opening their homes, wallets and heart in an attempt to help those who have lost everything. I am at a loss as to what we can do to help. I have volunteered to cook meals, babysit and help in any other capacity I can but it still doesn't seem like enough. I hope you will keep these families in your prayers as they deal with the mess the flood has caused. Here are some pictures that have been taken from around town.

Hand Me Downs

It's always nice to have hand me downs, at least from my perspective. It helps us to save some money, but I do have to say it does not help to save time me time. Going through the clothes, washing them, folding them, and putting them away take a lot of time. Last night I went through the hand me downs from my sister's daughter Karoline for Abby, the hand me downs from both Abby and Karoline for Elizabeth and then also went through the clothes of Karoline, Abby and Elizabeth for our new niece Rexi. It's amazing how stains can appear on clothing while in storage, thank goodness for meat tenderizer and shout with Resolve. Now everyone is clothed for Spring, that is if it ever gets warm. Now I have to finish assessing what Abby and Elizabeth need. Cover your eyes Matt. I really want to go shopping, even if I'm not buying anything for me.

Snow Cream

Since we are getting snow right now and we have no ice cream in the house we are going to make Snow Cream. I remember making snow cream with my mother and sometimes my grandmother while I was growing up. Here's the link to the recipe.

If you have snow I hope you enjoy. If not keep this in mind for the next time you do get snow. I also know that Mayfield has an ice cream that is called snow cream it's pretty good.

No School

Well, we didn't get the snow I was hoping for but school was cancelled. It was raining when I got up this morning so I was surprised to see that school was cancelled. Matt left the house at 8:30 and then called to let me know that they cancelled school for good reason. The roads are icy and dangerous. I guess that's why we've been hearing sirens all morning long. So I will get my somewhat peaceful day at home with nowhere to go and good reason to go nowhere. For this I am thankful. Now I just have to figure out what the kids and I will be doing all day.

Snow and Ice

We have missed the past two days of school because of snow and ice. We were suppose to get 3 to 6 inches of snow and instead got that much in sleet, freezing rain and snow, mostly of the icy stuff. The kids and I are becoming stir crazy and I hope that the roads will be clear enough for school tomorrow but it's doubtful since they still haven't plowed our street yet. I also have to take Eliabeth to the doctor tomorrow for her two month checkup and shots, so I hope it's not too bad tomorrow morning so I can do that fairly easily.
